Inner City High Schools Drama Festival '09
"I am Human because I belong"
The Hillbrow Theatre Project, an initiative of the Lutheran Community Outreach Foundation (Hillbrow), is proud to announce the 5th Inner City High Schools Drama Festival '09. The festival will take place at the Hillbrow Theatre from the 8th to the 12th of September 2008.
The theme for this year's festival is "I am human because I belong", a quote by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, which encompasses many themes and ideas; the most important being the development of self-worth and respect for our fellow human beings. It encompasses the ideals of the Bill of Rights and our Constitution.
We are pleased that fourteen schools, including Albert High based at the Central Methodist Church, are at present busy workshopping original plays based on this theme.
This theatre event was established to help promote drama in the inner city high schools and to contribute towards building positive attitudes within the inner city community. Through drama and other arts projects inner city learners can start to engage and deal with issues that affect them. The festival is proud to give a platform to new stories created and performed by the youth who experience life in the inner city of Johannesburg. This project also promotes dialogue between the various inner city schools to help build a strong and vibrant inner city community.
The City of Johannesburg (Arts, Culture and Heritage) has again recognized the importance of the event by offering support. This event is also made possible through the generous support of the Anglo American Chairman's Fund and Macs Maritime Carrier Shipping. We are also very pleased to be part of Joburg Arts Alive '09, who have very generously sponsored book voucher prizes for each of the awards.
