On 10 September school children from the South African Ballet Theatre Mamelodi, Alexandra and Katlehong outreach programmes had the opportunity to see a performance at the Joburg Theatre of the ballet classic Giselle.

Jazz on the Lake
It was a seven-hour long party at the legendary Jazz on the Lake on 6 September. International artists included Senegal's Omar Pene backed by Super Diamono, Indian star Susheela Raman with guitarist Sam Mills, and Brazil’s SpokFevro Orquestra. Stars from the local firmament included Tsepo Tshola, Selaelo Selota, Zuluboy and the scintillating trio of Concord Nkabinde, Kesivan Naidoo and Mark Fransman. |  |
Opening ceremony
The 17th annual Joburg Arts Alive Festival gets underway, with a mass choir of 250 children from Joburg schools singing the Arts Alive theme song, Let your sparkle fly, children of the heavens. Guest of the evening was 74-year-old Dorothy Masuku, who belted out several numbers. She was joined on stage by other great Joburg divas – Sibongile Khumalo, Gloria Bosman and Abigail Kubeka. |  |
Dance Alive
From the classical ballet of Giselle to the dramatic presentation of Dada Masilo’s Carmen; from the powerful and evocative dance-forms from India to the musical play of You Pushed Me, the dance programme is a veritable feast. |  |
In performance
The Joburg Arts Alive 2009 programme has lined up some top-class musicians: from jazz icon Dorothy Masuku and guitar virtuoso Selaelo Selota to the soulful Tamil Londoner Susheela Raman; from the hard-hitting musicians of Gang of Instrumentals to the masterful melodies of flautist Pt. Hari Prasad Chaurasia, with a little help from DJ Monde. |  |
