Malls and shopping centres across Joburg are expected to teem with shoppers searching for discounts and bargains during the inaugural Joburg Shopping Festival.

Joburg Kids’ Day, sponsored by Old Mutual

When: 6 September
Where: Emmarentia Dam

Just for a day, the Emmarentia Botanical Gardens will be turned in a children’s paradise with magicians, clowns, a host of giant puppets on parade – and of course, jumping castles. A highlight of the day is the performance of Beautiful Creatures, from the popular CDs created by Ed Jordan and Alan Glass.

Wazwan Cuisine – Food From Kashmir
When: 7 – 16 September
Where: Le Canard, Morningside

The ultimate formal banquet in Kashmir is the royal Wazwan. Two master chefs from Kashmir will be bringing 36 Kashmiri food courses for the South African palates.

Thailand Grand Festival

When: 12 - 13 September, 11am - 5pm
Where: Zoo Lake, Parkview

Discover the essence of Thailand: the festival has a Thai Puppet Show depicting the exquisite Ramayan, the romantic tale of Rama and Sita, as well as a display of fabulous crafts including umbrella painting and products made from coconut shells. There will be delicious Thai cuisine on sale and a sumptuous Silk fashion show on which to feast the eye.

Netherlands Mayday Explore Project

When: 24 – 26 September
Where: Soweto

This will include a Dutch team of break-dancers, MCs and a graffiti artist.

Hillbrow Peace Festival

When: 24 – 26 September
Where: Hillbrow Theatre

The festival includes exhibitions, workshops, music, dance, poetry, and drama performances.

Soweto Festival

Soweto FestivalWhen: 24 – 27 September
Where: University of Johannesburg, Soweto Campus

The annual Soweto Festival boosts both business and culture, with that special Soweto flair. There will be a Youth Zone, story telling, tourism exhibits, business opportunities and a host of entertainment and dining. Festival partners are: the SABC, the National Arts Council, Wits University (Department of Humanities), Royal Thai Embassy, Austrian Embassy, Indian Embassy, Alliance Francaise, Soweto Festival, and the Johannesburg Festival of Shopping.

Fietas Festival

Where: Fietas, Vrededorp and Pageview

Celebrating cultural diversity … with a spread of food, music, reflection and prayer. Highlights include a performance by a leading group of Qawali singers, a Langarm Dance at the Springbok Hall, and an exhibition of photographs by David Goldblatt. Join in the kite making and make it a family affair.
