THE three-day Moshito music industry conference and exhibition, which closed on Friday, is an annual event valued by many

THE three-day Moshito music industry conference and exhibition, which closed on Friday, is an annual event valued by many. In the creative and cultural industries (where progress depends on networks of practitioners far more than on physical infrastructure) opportunities to connect and debate are vital, and this year’s venue, the compact, well-resourced Sci-Bono conference wing, could have been made for the occasion.

M ost noticeable in the proceedings was how swiftly the revolution in the international music industry value chain — close to a decade old by now — is making its mark on SA . No longer is a physical recording the highest-value product at the end of the chain. Instead, the high-value product is a musician’s creativity (intellectual property) as expressed in live performance and leveraged through a wide range of digital products and associated physical memorabilia.

In this new context, getting recorded music heard is a stage on the road to earning, not the main or final source of income. Musicians still need to own, register and protect their creativity, but petty battles against knock-off cassettes hawked at taxi ranks belong to the business model of the past.

As composer and performer Tu Nokwe told one seminar: “When I see those cassettes, I don’t stop them. It makes me happy, because it’s getting me known and helping me to earn from my music.”

SA is a special context, however, because of the disgraceful record of parts of the apartheid music industry. There are still (sometimes, relatively recent) past and overseas revenues to be reclaimed. And gross inequalities in access to digital knowledge and resources mean that not all musicians find an open door to the new business terrain.

Smartphone ownership is rising, but not every owner realises they own a tool for professional autonomy and worldwide marketing. Airtime and data charges remain monopolised and, for many, prohibitively expensive. Musicians at Moshito were well aware of this.

In their final session, there were demands for fast-track digital mentorship, improved access and reduced data costs so that all musicians — rural and urban — can come in from the cold.

“They must teach this technology to empower our kids,” demanded one rural participant. “They must teach about the industry, not just about playing music.”

ARTS Alive events dominate the week’s live-music landscape in Jo burg, as they will throughout the month. Today is Brazil’s National Day and Teresa Cristina, an exponent of new wave samba, performs at the Mandela Theatre at the Joburg Theatre tonight.

On Friday , in an event forming part of the India-SA Shared Histories series, Shubha Mudgal sings at Joburg’s Linder Auditorium. Mudgal is an exponent of songs based on devotional poetry — including Bhakti and Sufic poetry — from the Indian classical canon, but she also composes, teaches and works in popular and film music forms

On Sunday — if your eardrums can take it — the Grammy-nominated Taiwan Ten Drum Art Percussion ensemble play an afternoon concert at the Joburg Theatre Fringe. The “Ten” in their title refers to the name of their founder, the symbolism of the Chinese numeral (which resembles crossed drumsticks) and the powers that inform and inspire their music.

On Tuesday, Cuban pianist Luis Lugo plays the Mandela Theatre at the Joburg Theatre, offering both Cuban compositions and works by Franz Liszt, whose bicentennial this year marks.

Outside the Arts Alive umbrella, on Friday at Unisa in Pretoria, and on Saturday at the Linder, the remarkable Dutch Calefax reed quintet (oboe, saxophones, clarinets and bassoons) will present a repertoire ranging from early music through the romantic era to jazz and new concert compositions.

And at the Market Theatre, on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, as part of the Refuse The Hour series, there are collaborations between artist William Kentridge, Francois Sarhan (aka Professor Glacon) and musicians including pianist Jill Richards, guitarist Reza Khota and, later in the evening, the quartet, Quatuor Bela.
